Blurb:

Three Sussex authors … Twelve horror stories.

Take a terrifying journey to a coastline associated with candyfloss and amusement arcades, and see it stripped to the bone.

Whether it’s seagulls that prove to be more than a nuisance, the mysterious inhabitants of a forgotten village, or a fisherman whose Easter eggs are not for consumption, the horrors are always there … and much closer than we care to admit.

Stories include:

Mark Cassell’s
– The Rebirth
– The Commission
– Demon Alcohol
– Away in a Mangler

Jonathan Broughton’s
– The Stealth of Spiders
– You Have One Message
– Furzby Holt
– The Pensioner Pirates of Marine Parade

Rayne Hall’s
– Seagulls
– Normal, Considering the Weather
– Scruples
– Double Rainbows

Please note: Some stories contain moderate blood and gore.

Am I Scaring You Tonight?

*** I was given this anthology in exchange for an honest review. ***

I was really excited when I was contacted by Nev from Confessions Publicity about this because I already know Rayne Hall and Mark Cassell on Twitter and have talked to them and heard about their books. I couldn’t wait to start reading the book when I got my hands on it. I knew it might take me a bit to read it though since  I have a lot going on in my personal life, but I knew it’d be worth it and I was right.

I liked some of the stories over others because I felt they stood out more. Like The Rebirth, for example. I felt like this one was really fascinating and creative and truly horrifying. No one would want to birth an egg after being kidnapped from a vine. The whole thing is just revolting and creepy. Plus that bird that was the “mama” , just cringe-worthy and pleasing for a horror story, but I wouldn’t ever want that to happen in my life.

Demon Alcohol was another great story that was pretty horrifying. I just feel like it was a Twilight Zone episode mixed with an American Horror Story episode. So bizarre and creepy with weird fleshy beings and bloody gore. For some reason it reminded me of Lizzie Borden case as well. Something always there… I thought that the story was brilliant but made me shudder to think if it would ever happen. God, I hope not. *Shudder*

Away In A Mangler is so messed up it’s not even funny. I was rooting for Tanya the whole time. I just couldn’t believe strangeness. I knew something was off right away. The story reminded me of the movie Split. This was probably the most horrific story out of all the stories. There was a little twist too about the figurines.  ugh. Gross.

You Have One Message and Furzby Holt were really interesting too. Made you think about what our futures could hold if we forget about the sick or if we continue to be dependent on technology. I really thought these were horrifying in a way that it is possibility of happening. It is kind of sad too and I really had deep thought and reflection after these two.

Seagulls and Double Rainbows were pretty good too but were more horrific in as that they would be likely to happen. Seagulls attacking people and men cheating and thinking there won’t be consequences.  It is awful but it was obvious that would be the end result. The dreaded end result.

I really enjoyed 7 of the 12 stories and would suggest this anthology to anyone who enjoys horror. I gave this 3 stars because I didn’t feel that the other stories in my taste and also because I felt at times I was pushing myself to finish the book. It is always hard for me to rate anthologies. The plus side is I enjoyed more than I disliked!

I really enjoyed all three of these authors together and I hope they do another anthology. I think this was a great thing and they should do more of it. Hopefully next time I will get my review done quicker if my computer will corporate.

SOS

**** I was given this book in exchange for an honest review. ****

Okay so when the first book ended the way it did, I needed this book as soon as possible and I got it from Sonya right away just by emailing her. I just had to know what was going to happen next with Lia and the craziness of her life that included Hawk.Things got real interesting fast.

As soon as the book started I was pulled in because Lia was being pulled in different directions right away. Feelings were being spilled and she didn’t know what to do. Hell, she still had to figure out her own. Once she does, everything turns into chaos and Hawk goes mad. Madder than the mad hatter and it isn’t cool.

Something bad happens to Lia because someone is after her and everyone is trying to figure out who it is. Is it a friend? One of the men after her love? Is it Hawk? Who is it? Well, whoever it is they are done with the pranks and are out to kill. Who said college was all about learning and life and sometimes falling in love?

There is so much going on in this book and I absolutely love it. I didn’t think that the second book could get any better but it did. I couldn’t get enough of the book with all the twists and turns. Also with everyone finally getting their feelings together and figured out.

I adore the progress where Lia and Robins are at but of course I would love more. I will always love more of these two. They are just the best!

The way the book ended was even more of a shocker than how the first book ended! Like fall out of my chair shocker. Like whaaaa? Babam, no thank you ma’am.  I expected the last half, but not the first half Sonya.  Although I suppose upon further reflection it makes sense, but wooo give a girl some warning something’s gonna happen.

Now, I have to wait until the next book is out and what is a girl to do with an ending like that? I mean, for real?

Blurb:
Is life monotonous? Mercy certainly thinks so,
but coming home to her empty London flat after another miserable day at work, she finds she is being haunted by a pair of eyes.

Is she delusional, or is time the delusion?
Falling for a time traveler comes with plenty of surprises and a good deal of danger.

Tancred Nine is an adventure in himself, a man of startlingly strange ideas and beliefs mixed with humor and excitement. But he comes from a time where playing with genetics has gone horribly wrong.

Travelling through time tunnels can be a risky business,
which door should you take, which need to be avoided at all costs?

Follow Mercy as she abandons her timid and tedious life for the love of adventure and the most delusional creature of all.
Can Mercy help save the future of humanity, or will she lose herself in time?

Gotta Get Back In Time

*** I was given this ARC in exchange for an honest review. ***

I thought that this book would be really interesting because I normally have like time travel books in the past. Plus this one has new ideas that involve altering genetics and strange creatures. Some you can see that look hideous, but some are invisible.

Although this book was so overwhelming with new ideas and information that every single page was just information dump after information dump. I felt confused and completely lost most of the time. Plus Tancred, the traveler talked in circles most of the time in his own language from the “future” which didn’t really make much sense to me or Mercy which was the girl from the past.

So I kind of felt like I was in a boat without paddles in the middle of a body of water. It was an unpleasant feeling to say the least. I guess I was just mainly disappointed because I know that this book could have been so great if it wouldn’t have jumped all over the place so much and if things were explained more. So maybe I wouldn’t be a flailing fish? I don’t know.

If the ideas would have been more spread out too this would have improved the book too and explained in extreme depth. We the readers cannot guess at these complicated things of your brilliant mind. At least not yet, we need some more background information, please.

I really did enjoy the part about the dinosaurs though. I thought that part was interesting and how they went to sites to dig them up. That was fascinating and also when they went back to see them. The descriptions of them was almost like I could see them and I really enjoyed that! So that was the only time I really enjoyed the vivid details in this book where I didn’t want to put the book down.

This just really wasn’t the type of book for me to read. Apparently, not all time travel books are for me.

Blurb: She’s my roommate.

I know how she takes her tea, how she organizes her closet.

I know when she goes to bed each night, what she eats for breakfast, the passcode on her phone.

I know she calls her mother on Mondays, takes barre on Thursdays, and meets her friends for drinks on Fridays.

But more important than any of that … I know what she did.

Mr Sandman, Bring Me A Dream

*** I received this ARC in exchanged for an honest review. ***

So when I read the blurb, I was extremely curious as to what this was about. What happened? What DID The roommate do?  Was this like, I Know What You Did Last Summer ? I HAD to know. So as soon as I started reading this book, I was pulled in because it wasn’t what I thought it would be like at first. Nothing was suspicious, I mean NOTHING. So I was a little confused, but I carried on because I needed to know what happened next.

Everything was completely normal. Even including one of the main characters being down on her luck in the beginning. So I read on to see where her life and luck would take her in this story…

I just knew something good would happen. I was so right! As the book went on things got weirder and weirder. At one point I wondered if I was in The Twilight Zone. Things weren’t making sense and had me questioning why the characters did that. Namely, that damn roommate! There are some bizarre things that happen that had me scratching my head, like whaaaa? I would not want a roommate like that FYI. I never felt so weirded out in my life.

Also the plot twists that happen in the book towards the end, I didn’t see coming, you guys. I felt like the rug was ripped out from under me and I fell on my ass. I looked around like, what the fuck just happened and how? It was jarring to say the least.  This book honestly reminded me of the book, The Girl On The Train and the movie, Single White Female along with its own twisted, mixed up ideas.

I look forward to reading another book by Minka Kent because this one was extremely satisfying. Read at your own risk.

Blurb:

Clive Menard is just an ordinary guy living an ordinary life. But when a talking spider crawls inside his head, things get a lot less ordinary…and people start dying.

Could an itsy-bitsy arachnid be behind the killing spree terrorizing Clive’s community? To evade a sharp detective and find a murderer among friends, Clive must shake the cobwebs loose and piece together the puzzle of his life, all without falling prey to a dark force beyond his comprehension.

Something Wicked

*** I was given this ARC, in exchange for an honest review. ***

When I was contacted about reading What Hides Within, I was really intrigued. This is Jason’s debut book, but with a new cover. I am not sure what the first cover was like but… I personally think that this cover definitely matches the story’s creepy/horror factor. I don’t know who designed it, but that was genius.

Before I even started reading this, I wondered if it was going to be like Spiderman with an arachnid involved.

Just that this time the spider talked to the main character and crawls inside his head, then people start dropping like flies.

What could be more intriguing than that? And who or what is behind all of this?

So, once I started reading the book, I realized that something wasn’t quite right because Clive shows his crazy side right away and I was like, wait what?! Things are not as they seem in this horror ride of an adventure, if you’d like to call it that. There are some sick and twisted themes and events in here that I can only call marvelous because I love horror and I am happy to say so.

No one and nothing can be trusted, as it should be in horror. I found myself wondering what would happen next and I was also extremely pleased about that. Plus I don’t think I have ever laughed so hard while reading something so gritty and horrifying.

It. Was. Glorious.

Magical Even.

I think I even spilled some tears laughing as I woke my neighbors from it, while reading into the late night hours. TOTALLY WORTH IT.

I loved pretty much everything about this book, even though I hate spiders with a burning vengeance. Nasty little things. Cue scrunched up face. The only thing that I didn’t like was the ending

That ending though. WHYYYYYYYYYYY !!!!!!

Why you gotta do me like that Jason?

After everything we’ve been through….. WHYYY???

I think I might be scarred for life.

Rebel Just For Kicks

*** I was given this ARC, in exchange for an honest review. ***

When I first saw the description of this I was intrigued, and I had the right to be. I had never heard of a soul reaver before in fantasy before. So I had to find out what Daphne was all about. You see, she calls herself a monster because she has to feed off of the feelings of others and then once a year consume a soul for her to stay alive.

BUT, she only takes negative feelings and souls with  layers of darkness to their  very depths. For that reason, I don’t find her a monster. I find her gentle and kind. Just a beautiful being. She just doesn’t see it.

::::WARNING:::: There are triggers in here for self-harm. Daphne harms herself because the souls inside her ARE NOT GOOD. THEY ARE DARK.

Upon looking for the soul to consume she stumbles into a new world that is complicated and dangerous. Where it seems every being in it wants her dead even though she belongs in this new world as a reaver. She doesn’t know whom to trust.

There are so many twists and surprises in this book that I was amazed. You MUST keep your eyes open at all times so you don’t miss anything. Someone is always scheming or something else is happening.

So much action happens in this book that it is almost unbelievable how small of a book this is. I just can’t fathom how Victoria came up with all of this and fit it all in here. I really don’t understand how such literary genius didn’t come across my radar sooner. This will be a forever favorite of mine.

Daphne is really powerful and the way her powers are shown and grow throughout the book are exponential. The way her powers are described is with intricate detail and is really beautiful how she sees people’s souls and feelings. I would even go as far to say that it is breathtaking.

Insert SWOON here.

Daphne finds true love with him and I couldn’t be happier. They have been through so much together in this book and I know they will in the next one too. I couldn’t have picked a better match because this pair is so beautiful together it actually hurts to read about it. Of all the things that has happened to them they deserve some joy in their lives.

Alright, so I knew before I started this book that it had a cliffhanger ending, but damn. With Mist just “in the wind”, it can’t end like that. With all that happened right before the ending.  It was like there was an information dump on me, then BOOM the book ended. I can’t handle and process that all at once!! Give a girl a break! Plus I have to wait till book 2 is out to find out about my Mist.

I felt this book down to my heart, soul and back and it was crushing. I don’t know what I am going to do with myself. So you better read this!!!

*Hugs Self*

I guess it is fitting that the next book I am reading is called Broken House. I am feeling a little broken after that.

You Like The Idea Of Her, But Rip Away The Skin…

*** I was given this ARC, in exchange for an honest review.***

I was really excited to read this book because it is so different from other books I have read about reapers. First of all, she is a reaper for a vampire warlord on a hidden island instead of a reaper for death like every other book out there. So I wanted to know why she was a reaper for him instead and what made HER, so special. Ya know?

So that was the first thing that made me want to read it, but then apparently she was dead before and lived another life, then was turned into a reaper. Someone from her life before she was a reaper shows up in her bushes on her property… DEAD.

Now the FBI think she is the murderer. Is she? I had to know.

Once I started reading Rain Dance, the action started right away! Eden was collecting souls and then all of the sudden someone was trying to kill her. I am happy to say that the rest of the book is like that, with many, many twists. These twists were very clever too, I might add. There were some impressive parts to this book. I loved it.

There was a lot of commotion going on and many things are revealed and I really enjoyed them. It was very creative and imaginative. I really loved and adored how different and kickass this book was.

One of the things that was awesome was the talking cat. YES! You really did just read that and his name is Kahn and he is such sassy fun. He made me laugh with his, “stupid humans” comments here and there. PRICELESS. He’s a smarty too. He makes the book that much better. Ugh I just love that little guy ! ❤

I loved how sassy and rebellious Eden is in this book. She really needed to be on her toes with all the disasters going on around her and she was. The poor thing didn’t know who she could trust, but that didn’t stop her. She had a lot of depth that showed piece by piece throughout the book. It showed that she wasn’t a heartless reaper. Although, there is more to her than just what was shown. I know there is and I want it all.

Same with the other characters. There was a great amount of detail given, but there is still vital information needed about each character that adds to the story. It also adds to who they are as a character and this story was particularly was missing that so it lost a star.

I am hoping that these details will be revealed in the second book, Heat Wave (Sunshine & Scythes Book 2). I can’t wait to get my hands on it! It comes out February 1, so we have a bit to wait. I think anyone who doesn’t pick this book up would sadly miss out on an incredible view of reapers and the supernatural world. So don’t be one of THOSE PEOPLE.

Okay, so I thought that by at least the title of the book, this would be humorous. At least a little. *sigh* I guess the joke was on me, because I DNF this when my kindle said 8%. The book was not what I thought it would be. I mean I understand that she is attractive and everything and this was an insta-love read, but damn. This was written so poorly.

It was cringe-worthy the way the main male character was towards her. I was really creeped out. Like he hadn’t even met her and was acting all fucking in love and possessive and like he needed to sleep with her because the way she ate his donuts. He acted like he would go and get her through a glass pane and ravage her over it. I was revolted.

Then when they finally met, she was so happy he wanted to have sex with her over how much she enjoyed the donuts his company made. He gave her a job and it was like voiced that she would have to sleep with him to keep it. She was all for it. I wanted to throw up. I just couldn’t finish reading this trash. Some people actually said they loved this and gave it 5 stars. I think they were smoking something or other.

I just don’t get how this was even published. Must be off their damn rocker, you guys. Honestly.

Okay so, I read this on Sep 2, 2017, but was so like WTF over it that I waited until now to post about it. Can you blame me though? I mean, seriously. Ugh, I definitely don’t recommend reading it. I don’t even know if I would read other stuff by this author since this is horrifying and not in a good way. I love horror books, but not like these.

Have a good one you guys and good luck if you try to read this one!

Murder Was The Case

*** I was given this ARC, in exchange for an honest review. ***

I knew that as soon as I read the blurb, I had to get this book from the Hidden Gems website. How could I not, when someone is killing the main character’s friends off one by one? In different, horrible gruesome ways. The whole time the killer evades the police and when they are done killing each victim… they post the pictures of that victim onto social media as that person’s profile picture. This all included seven friends called the “Magnificent 7” because of their friendship… among other things.

There were so many layers to this story that I was extremely impressed with how the story was woven with such intricate detail. The twists in here were KILLER too ! I just loved how reading Friends List was like watching a movie in fascinating horror as it all goes on with all the action. You GUYS! It was like, you never knew how the next person was going to get offed, until they did. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time and I would have totally been biting my nails, if I was a nailbiter.

I was rooting for certain people not to get killed and was surprised with what happened and damn. This was one intense book. Some of the things that occured, I predicted, but others I was like, whoa now, wait now, what? HUH?! Oh dear.

No one can be trusted, okay? And nothing is as it seems. That is all I am saying at this point. For Real.

Young, Dumb and Bold

*** I was given this Advanced Reader Copy, in exchange for an honest review. ***

I was really excited to read this book because the blurb was fascinating and weird and I thought ‘this is my kind of book’, so I grabbed it quickly from the Hidden Gems site. As soon as the book started, things got weird, I mean WEIRD.  People were dying, but they couldn’t see what killed them. The one guy was running away from it and he was the only one who actually knew it was there and he killed himself so he wouldn’t have to deal with the unholy creature.  YEAH folks, that’s how it starts out.  I was like, what the fuck just happened??? dcfkljsdofivnjsodfgjosidfgj

So to be clear, throughout the whole book, there is nothing, but action, odd things happening, weird creature thingys, vampires, knights, wizards and special artifacts… but what the book doesn’t have is background details that are vital to the story. So the book has a lot of upfront detail that keeps you interested and invested wanting more, but without the other details you are a little disappointed about the backstory.  So at times you feel like you’re flying by the seat of your pants to keep up with the action, but you also wish that the author would have dug deeper.

You just seem to get a small glimpse into the characters and what you see is great, but some if not most of these characters are mysterious. Plus there are a few that are barely mentioned and you are like, wait a minute! Wait a minute! I smell something big, something isn’t right about that one, but then again the action starts. The book carries on. So I really need to get my hands on the next one because there is no way that I am okay with how it ended. That was BS. You can’t just go and drop bombs on me like that and then be like adios, *hand wave*, the book is done. Give a girl a break!
